Microsoft and Lenovo quickly swashbuckle Windows 7 pirates

First you got your hands on a leaked copy of the Windows 7 RTM. Bad idea, says Microsoft.

Then you tracked down 7loader, which took advantage of a leaked Lenovo product key. We know it's out there, came the nonchalant reply from Redmond.

And now, thanks to a cooperative effort, the workaround has already been defeated. The official blog post touts improvements in Windows 7, which "already includes an improved ability to detect hacks, also known as activation exploits, and alert customers who are using a pirated copy." The post continues, stating that no systems will ever be sold using the particular OEM key that was utilized by the exploit.

So what's Microsoft's real goal here? "Our objective isn't to stop every "mad scientist" that's out there from dabbling; our aim is to protect our customers from commercialized counterfeit software that impacts our customers' confidence in knowing they got what they paid for."

Sure...There's absolutely no reason it would have anything to do with crippling the biggest Windows competitor on the market - pirated copies of Windows.

Windows 7 OEM Master Key Leaked, Can Activate Any OEM Build

Microsoft is the victim of more leaks

While software leaks are inevitable, Windows 7 has been particularly leaky during the course of its development.  Hot on the heels of the leaks of near-RTM builds onto the internet, a new Windows 7 package has leaked -- an active copy of Ultimate edition.

The new version comes courtesy of what appears to be a legitimate Lenovo OEM Ultimate edition DVD .ISO file, first posted on a Chinese web forum.  The boot.wim file was cracked to yield the OEM-SLP key and the OEM activation certificate.

The data obtained turned out to be pure paydirt.  The key is the master OEM key, capable of activating OEM builds deliver to (and subsequently leaked from) any of the major OEMs -- Dell, HP, Acer, or Lenovo.  Further it reveals that Windows 7's OEM digital signing system uses the .xrm-ms extension, just like Windows Vista.

While leaks of Windows 7 are nothing new, this leak presents a particularly dangerous threat to Microsoft.  The company is left with only a few options -- changing the master OEM key, adding a second activation key for future builds, or changing its signing system.  Any of the possibilities will potentially throw OEMs off course, so Microsoft may opt to take no action at all

Microsoft has not yet commented on the developments.

Windows 7 will see and official release on October 22nd and RTM builds will reach OEMs on August 6th.

Microsoft, Yahoo Officially Anounce Partnership, Bing to Replace Yahoo Search

A cartoonist's take of the new deal. (Source: MSNBC) Pair faces serious antitrust scrutiny

Yahoo and Microsoft, as expected, have announced a major partnership.  After a year and a half of failed talks, the pair finally have come together and cut a deal.  Many changes were necessary for the deal to take place -- a succession of Yahoo's CEO leadership from co-founder Jerry Yang to outsider Carol Bartz and a new search engine from Microsoft (Bing) -- but now that it's here, it promises to change the face of the internet.

The pair will hold an estimated 28 percent of the search market, or roughly a third, behind Google, which will hold roughly two thirds of the market.  The deal will last much longer than previously speculated -- 10 years.

As previously anticipated, Microsoft's new Bing search engine/algorithm will be replacing Yahoo's search.  Yahoo's page will keep its look, but behind the scenes it will be powered by Bing.  Yahoo will focus on selling ads using Microsoft's AdCenter platform, which bids to challenge Google's AdWords.

The two companies predict that the deal will raise revenue by over $500M USD.

Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz cheered the deal, stating, "This agreement comes with boatloads of value for Yahoo!, our users, and the industry. And I believe it establishes the foundation for a new era of Internet innovation and development.  Users will continue to experience search as a vital part of their Yahoo! experiences and will enjoy increased innovation thanks to the scale and resources this deal provides.”

Bartz continued, “Advertisers will also benefit from scale and enjoy greater ease of use and efficiencies working with a single platform and sales team for premium advertisers. Finally, this deal will help us increase our investments in priority areas in winning audience properties, display advertising capabilities, and mobile experiences."

Steve Ballmer likewise was pleased by the deal, stating, "Through this agreement with Yahoo!, we will create more innovation in search, better value for advertisers, and real consumer choice in a market currently dominated by a single company.  Success in search requires both innovation and scale. With our new Bing search platform, we've created breakthrough innovation and features. "

Google has previously vowed to challenge any such deal on antitrust grounds.  The U.S. Department of Justice and the EU are currently considering the deal and will likely review it extensively in coming months.

CERN's "Perfect" Hadron Collider is Leaky, Launch Delayed Yet Again

The LHC has experience more issues, further delaying its restart. This time leaks were found in its insulating layer's vacuum. (Source: Flickr) Problems continue at the CERN project

For a project as ambitious and complex as CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC), setbacks are likely, in fact almost inevitable.  However, the delay would be worth it according to Bob Cousins, deputy to the scientific leader of one of the sensor experiments as it would allow the sensors to be made "even more perfect than before".

While the sensor may indeed be nearing perfection, the overall design is still experiencing problems.  Leaks in the insulating layer's vacuum were discovered in sectors 8-1 and 2-3 that would prevent it from properly operating.  This new problem will delay the restart from October to November.

The leaky sectors will be needed to be warmed from their current temperature of 80K to room temperature in order to plug the leaks.  The near-vacuum of the beam pipe will not be impacted.

The LHC is cooled with liquid helium injected into an insulating layer which surrounds the beam tube and is kept at near-vacuum.  This allows the LHC beam tube to be cooled to temperatures colder than that of outer space.  Last fall the particle collider was briefly turned on, but a cooling circuit melted leading to the damage to the electrical and cooling systems.

Scientists initially wanted to restart the LHC in April, but the large extent of the damages necessitated more repairs.

The cost of all the repairs thus far, though, have been small compared to the $10B USD estimated cost of building the LHC.  Current repairs have run over $35M USD, according to reports.

The LHC sits on the border between Switzerland and France and consists of a 17 mile long ring.  The ring is capable of imparting energies of 7 TeV onto particles, making for potential collisions at unprecedented energies.  Scientists hope these collisions will help them unlock physics secrets including understanding how dark matter and energy work and the discovery of the law theorized "God Particle" -- the Higgs boson.

The accelerator, when active will continue to close each winter, to avoid the prohibitively high energy costs.  The accelerator requires massive amounts of power to operate.

The Large Hadron Collider consists of a 17 mile, electronics-packed tunnel on the Swiss-French border. The collider will accelerate particles to unprecedented speeds and should unlock physics mysteries. (Source: CERN)

It's official, Windows 7 will RTM on August 6 - family pack confirmed

Brandon LeBlanc has spilled the RTM beans, announcing today that MSDN, Technet, and just about anyone else who isn't a retail customer or small OEM will be able to get their hands on the English Windows 7 RTM starting August 6, 2009. Additional languages may take until October 1st to appear.

Based on the way things have been happening thus far on the Windows 7 release timeline, that means Wzor.net should have the RTM on August 1st or 2nd and it'll be all over filesharing networks within a few hours of seeding.

We, of course, advocate only using a genuine TechNet subscription and downloading through official Microsoft channels. That said, should Microsoft's servers fail to handle the load once again or you don't want to monkey with an Akamai downloader, you'll have "other options."

The post will also point you to ReadySet7.com, where you can find information about - what else - Windows 7 readiness.
Way, way down at the bottom, LeBlanc also confirms the much-talked about Windows 7 family pack, saying "I'm happy to confirm that we will indeed be offering a family pack of Windows 7 Home Premium (in select markets) which will allow installation on up to 3 PCs."

How NASA Would Send Humans on Mars

As the 40th-anniversary celebrations of the moon landing end, a human voyage to Mars remains a holy grail for NASA.

"We're still looking at human exploration of Mars as one of the goals of the future at the top level," said NASA researcher Bret Drake with Lunar and Mars Integration at Johnson Space Center in Houston. "Having a human actually set foot on another planet would be one of the greatest adventures possible, one of the greatest monuments to history."

A crewed mission to the red planet is a daunting challenge that lies at the edge of current technological capabilities and possibly beyond. Still, NASA keeps a strategy to go there and constantly keeps up to date with new ideas.

"Mars is one of those targets of fascination that has been around a long time," Drake said.

How to get there

A voyage to Mars would take a crew about 180 days. So far NASA is exploring two options for propulsion there — a

nuclear thermal rocket and a chemical engine.

A nuclear thermal rocket, based off designs from the '60s and '70s, would use a nuclear reactor to super-heat a gas and blast it out the nozzle to generate thrust. "It's a very high-performance vehicle, and we think it's very safe, not radioactive at launch, but it is a nuclear system," Drake said. "The idea for the chemical engine is similar to that used on the space shuttle, liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen. It's a fairly well-known technology, but it's not as efficient as nuclear thermal."

To reach the Martian surface, NASA envisions an aerodynamic lander that flies down with thrusters to help it descend. The ascent vehicle that takes the crew back into space for the six-month trip home will likely rely on a combination of methane and liquid oxygen. "Oxygen is present in the Martian atmosphere in the carbon dioxide, so you can use resources on Mars to make it," Drake said.

Before the crew even gets to Mars, the plan is to send as much cargo there ahead of time as possible.

"That way we can know it's operating right before we ever commit the crew," Drake said. "A Mars mission is not like a lunar mission where you can come home at any time — once they're committed, a crew is out there for years."

By current NASA estimates, a crewed mission to Mars needs to lift about twice the mass of the International Space Station into space — roughly 1.76 million lbs. (800 metric tons) of technology. To launch the equipment, NASA plans on using the Ares V rocket, designed to be the most powerful rocket ever built and capable of carrying about 414,000 lbs. (188 metric tons) to low Earth orbit at one time.

"We're going to try to minimize the amount of assembly needed," Drake said. "The heavy lift capacity we'll have with the Ares V will allow for simple automatic rendezvous in orbit and docking of components."

The crew would ride up in one of the upcoming Ares I rockets before starting the voyage to Mars.

"Having humans in place could bring a wealth of experience and training and the ability to put into context what they see and to make real-time decisions, all things difficult to do with robots," Drake said.

The very habitat the crew stays at on the Martian surface would be sent ahead of time. "You can also do things like produce and store oxygen from resources at Mars beforehand for the crew and the ascent vehicle. You could generate water as well."

Big crew, long stay

NASA envisions a crew of six astronauts for a Mars mission. "That's about what's required for the skills needed — a commander, scientist, engineer, medical officer, things like that, as well as cross-training," Drake said. "They'll need expertise in a wide range of disciplines."

Currently NASA envisions a long stay for a crew at Mars, about 500 days.

"Crew autonomy is vital, because there's an up to 40 minute time delay in communication between Earth and the crew because of the distance," Drake said. "And the crew doesn't have a capability for re-supply — they'll just have what they send ahead or what they bring with them — so when things fail, they'll have to be able to repair them. They must be self-sufficient."

To survive the voyage, air and water need to be completely recycled regularly.

"We're learning a lot on the International Space Station right now on air revitalization and water recovery," Drake said. "What's nice about Mars is that there's carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, so that can help get us oxygen and water for the crew. In terms of food, we're looking at smaller systems, 'salad machines,' to grow food for the crew. Fresh food is not only good for nutrition, but good for the mind as well. A fresh tomato can really boost psychology."

Mental and physical challenges

The long hardship of roughly two-and-a-half years in space with only a few people in a potentially lethal environment will undoubtedly challenge the psyches of Mars explorers.

"The Russians are conducting a test right now that hopefully will shed light on the behavioral sciences aspect of a Mars mission," Drake said. "Looking at other remote exploration endeavors is helpful as well — Antarctica, or submarines — all that feeds into the human behavioral aspects of crew selection."

A key concern for astronauts as well as during the stay on Mars is dangerous radiation in the form of storms of high-energy particles from the sun as well as cosmic rays from deep space. "The best radiation protection material is hydrogen, or water, which is rich in hydrogen," Drake said.

On the surface of Mars, NASA envisions that cargo deployed ahead of time can produce water before the crew arrives to use as a shield during the crew's stay there. On the way to and from Mars, the ship could be configured so that water and food surround areas where crew spend most of their time, but "a 'storm shelter' aboard the ship will be an integral part for short events of radiation that can be lethal," Drake said.

No firm date has been set for any potential Mars mission, but it remains of keen interest not just to NASA, but also others, such as China.

"It's humanity's next step to understanding and expanding our presence outward," Drake said. "We view human exploration of Mars as being an international endeavor, most likely not limited to just one country, but probably of global scale.

Google Unveils Linux-based Chrome OS

Google finally ends long-term speculation, announcing a new Chrome OS

Google publicly announced it is working on a new Linux-based operating system aimed to compete against Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X.

Chrome OS is being designed by Google engineers for netbooks and is completely independent from its Android OS currently used on a growing number of smartphones.

"Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks," the company said in a blog post.  "Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010."

The OS itself is expected to make its debut sometime later this year.

Since Chrome OS will be available under an open source license, programmers can freely edit and modify the OS's code.  Furthermore, the OS will be designed for Intel and ARM processors, and could eventually transition away from netbooks to PCs and laptops.

The OS is specifically designed for users who use the internet heavily and won't be ideal for people who aren't connected to the internet often.  Google has said it would continue to launch new products and services in the cloud, including its own Gmail and Google Docs, but very few people expected an OS announcement.

Chrome OS will focus on speed, simplicity and security, and reportedly is a lightweight OS that will be able to boot up in just a few seconds.  Google hopes its interface will be simple enough for all users, with the GUI and user experience expected to be heavily Web-based.

Google is calling for help from the open source community to help work on the OS and iron out any bugs that may arise.
Many Google supporters said the company would eventually release a new OS -- wishful thinking, some analysts said -- but it appears to be a move that could move from netbooks to regular laptops.  Android, which is popular on smartphones, has led several manufacturers to begin using the OS on netbooks currently in development -- instead of porting Android over to netbooks immediately, it seems Chrome OS will help the void.

"We hear a lot from our users and their message is clear -- computers need to get better," the blog also reads.
Microsoft has long-ruled the OS market, but has faced increased pressure from Linux, and must now contend with yet another competitor.  Google has eaten into Microsoft's control of internet offerings, with its Google search engine, Gmail e-mail service, and other cloud-based services.

"We have a lot of work to do, and we're definitely going to need a lot of help from the open source community to accomplish this vision," the Google blog ends.

Microsoft Hohm Beta Goes Live, Takes on Google's PowerMeter

Microsoft's Hohm is a web application which aims to help users track and cut their power costs. The app looks to contend with Google's PowerMeter. (Source: Microsoft) Plug yourself into Microsoft

Microsoft wants you to plug yourself into its new technology.  Debuting today is Microsoft's new Hohm beta, which promises to provide homeowners with means to manage and track power usage in their homes.  The tool is a public beta so it's free for anyone to sign up for and try.

Power bills comprise a major expense for many homeowners.  For owners of small properties such as condominiums, U.S. power bills can be as little as $100 or less a month.  For owners of larger homes, power bills can soar to over $300 or more a month, though.  Power has variable costs, so if homeowners were able to run power-hungry appliances during lulls when power was cheaper, it would both ease stress on the aging power grid and cut their bills substantially.

This is the aim of new power meter technology from Microsoft, which will compete with Google's PowerMeter, the first such solution to hit the market.  Currently, the system does not physically connect to your power meter or appliances -- rather it takes in input such as your power bills and home information and uses it to generate suggestions.

The project is still in its infancy.  Explains Michaeljon Miller, software architect for Microsoft Hohm, "The team's been sitting in a conference room on campus since about 5:30 this morning watching things spin up. Considering this is the first major web application that most of the team has shipped, things went extremely well."

With Google already partnering with power meter manufacturers and utilities and beginning to deploy smart meters, don't expect Microsoft to wait long before taking the project up another notch.  The project currently is only available in the U.S.

Reports: Windows 7 Release to Manufacturing Set for July 13

Windows 7 nears general availability

The year's most highly anticipated software release, Windows 7, is just around the corner.  Microsoft recently announced that the new OS would see general availability (consumer sales) on October 22.  In preparation for that, it recently began its termination of the beta program, encouraging users to install the Release Candidate build which will be available until August.

A bevy of Windows blogs including Neowin.net, GeekSmack.net, and Wzor report that the final "gold" build of Windows 7 will occur on July 10 and the OS will see a release-to-manufacturing on July 13.  Release to manufacturing builds are typically identical to general availability builds for major software releases.  However, if a major bug is encountered, its possible the consumer release could feature something new.

The main purpose of the RTM build will be to give hardware manufacturers more time to tweak their drivers with a working "final" version of Windows 7.  The release of the build will coincide with the kickoff of Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference (WWPC) set to kick off in New Orleans.

Reportedly TechNet, MSDN, and a few other partner connections will all get the RTM build on July 13.  Also, it can be expected that the build will quickly leak onto torrents -- all of Microsoft's previous "private" releases leaked in short time.

U.S. and Canadian consumers have until Saturday, July 11 to pre-order Windows 7 at an ultra cheap price of $49.99 for a Home Premium upgrade or $99.99 for an upgrade to the professional edition.  Pre-orders in UK, Japan, France, and Germany will run from July 15 to August 14.

LucasArts classics coming to Steam this Wednesday, July 8

LucasArts is poised to deliver a one-two ... err, three punch for classic gaming fans, beginning with tomorrow's PC release of the first chapter of Tales of Monkey Island, titled "Launch of the Screaming Narwhal." Today, LucasArts announced not only the release date for Secret of Monkey Island: Special Editionit's next week, on July 15th – but also the availability of ten LucasArts classics from the back-catalog, to be made available on Steam this Wednesday, July 8! We spoke with LucasArts CEO Darrell Rodriguez, who told us that this is "a passion project" for him as well as his team. "This is the first time these titles have ever been on digital distribution, and it's something we're all very excited about," he told us this morning. "And this is just the beginning."

That "beginning" includes ten titles from the LucasArts vaults, including adventure gaming classics like Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure, LOOM, and The Dig. Also included in this first batch of games are Armed and Dangerous, LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure, Star Wars Battlefront II, Star Wars Republic Commando, Star Wars Starfighter, and Thrillville: Off the Rails. The press release calls this the "first round of releases" and Rodriguez promises us they've got more in store, including "some bundles that offer some extra value." Those bundles are Steam-only for now, though; a retail package is "something to definitely consider" Rodriguez tells us, though LucasArts has "no plans for them right now."

While these ten titles are straight ports – so no Steam Achievements, and no fancy new graphics and sound a la Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition – LucasArts is considering enhanced versions of other titles, though "a lot of it will ultimately depend on the commercial success of Monkey Island Special Edition," we're told. "We have the plans in our back pocket and if things go extremely well, we'll roll out those plans and put them into action. Whether it's Maniac, Day of the Tentacle, or Grim." And those releases may come to other digital distribution platforms – much of that strategy will be determined by the success of this latest initiative. Without Steam (or a competent alternative!) what chance is there of Mac support? Rodriguez says, "We're definitely looking into that as well. We're looking at partners for potentially porting some stuff over to Mac, and figuring out the right distribution channel as well."

When asked about the possibility of portable ports, notably the iPhone or PSP Go, Rodriguez noted, "On iPhone, you know Apple's policy that we can't talk about a release until it's ready to release. But it would make sense that we would do something like that if we were to go in that direction ... wink wink, nod, nod." As for PSP Go, he told us, "We've seen it and we're definitely investigating PSP Go. We've got our Singapore office, which does the majority of our handheld titles, and they're playing with it right now, seeing what we can do."

For LucasArts, this represents a radical shift in tone from the company that (in)famously canceled development of Sam & Max: Freelance Police just five years ago, before laying off the entire adventure gaming development team. Many of those expats regrouped under the new banner of Telltale Games ... the very same Telltale Games that's currently kicking off the next ten days of LucasArts adventure gaming with Tales of Monkey Island. Rodriguez told us, "I'm a huge fan of Grim Fandango and Maniac Mansion and all the old adventure titles, and it's definitely something that's part of our heritage." By the looks of things, that's not just lip service.

Family Pack license for Windows 7 could cover 3 machines on the cheap

Got three computers at home? There is reason to believe that Microsoft will let you license Windows 7 on all of them for a very competitive price.

In recent leaked RTM branch builds of WIndows 7 Home Premium, there's been an interesting language chance in the license agreement under "Installation Use and Rights":

b. Family Pack. If you are a "Qualified Family Pack User", you may install one copy of the software marked as "Family Pack" on three computers in your household for use by people who reside there. Those computers are the "licensed computers" and are subject to these license terms. If you do not know whether you are a Qualified Family Pack User, visit go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?Linkid=141399 or contact the Microsoft affiliate serving your country.

No, the link doesn't work yet, but this seems to indicate that Microsoft is going to offer a multi-license pack of Windows 7 Home Premium. Other builds (Ultimate, Pro, etc.) don't contain the Family Pack wording.

It makes sense for several reasons. First, Microsoft offered a similar deal for Vista upgrades when it was released - a two pack for $49.99. Second, they use this strategy to push Office 2007 with the Home and Student edition. Third, Apple does it with Leopard and at one hell of a price: $199 for up to five Macs under the same roof.

CNet's Ed Bott predicts Microsoft will undercut Apple slightly and we'll see the Family Pack priced at $189.99, though it will likely cover three machines as the Office license does.

World's Largest Commercial Telecom Satellite Launches Into Orbit

image The world's largest telecom satellite will help fill in cell phone dead zones

An Ariane 5 rocket carried the world's largest commercial telecommunications satellite into orbit from the European Space Agency (ESA)'s French Guinea launch center.

The TerreStar Networks' TerreStar-1 satellite, which weighs 6.9 tons and has a 60-ft. antenna, will be used to offer high-speed internet and wireless voice services.  The satellite will float in orbit 22,000 miles above the Earth's surface and cost $300 million to build and launch.

TerreStar hopes emergency responders, the U.S. military, and rural customers with currently spotty service will have more reliable telecom services.  Satellite internet service is too slow and unreliable to receive large amounts of government funding, but the TerreStar satellite will help change that -- satellite coverage will be able to cover a larger area and will fix any cell phone "dead zones" that are still found across the United States.

Customers will be able to use a small device about the same size as a Research In Motion (RIM) BlackBerry Curve that is a full-mode terrestrial/satellite handset.  The device operates on the AT&T terrestrial network while in range, and switches to satellite when service begins to drop off.

When trying to connect to the satellite, the handset must have a clear line of sight with the southern sky.  It should be interesting to see what kind of handsets will be used, as current satellite phones are bulky and thick, but the satellite will help shrink the size and design of future satellite phones.

In the future, SkyTerra is expected to launch two larger satellites, but didn't say when they'll be launched.  Ariane rockets will carry satellites and other payloads into orbit four more times into 2009, and has already had three successful launches so far.
