The Sci Fi Channel is preparing to launch a franchise that consists of a television show and a concurrently running massively multiplayer online title, the latter of which will help shape the plot of the former, reports the Los Angeles Times.
The unnamed television series is being handled internally by the Sci Fi Channel, while a virtually unknown development house known as Trion World Network is crafting the MMO. They expect to launch the project in Summer of 2010.
"A television show that is on once a week isn't enough. The fans today want the experience to go beyond that," said Sci Fi Channel president Dave Howe. "For example, we can tell them that there will be an alien invasion at a certain place in the game, at a certain time, and to be there with all their friends and be ready. The outcome depends on them. And then that battle will be part of the universe in the show."
